Janelle & Rick’s Ottawa Family Session

It's without a doubt that we are all still getting used to life during COVID. So as we educate ourselves, and get used to washing our hands more often, we are also trying to find ways to create our "new normal". For me, that meant finding safe ways to capture family moments.

It’s without a doubt that we are all still getting used to life during COVID. So as we educate ourselves, and get used to washing our hands more often, we are also trying to find ways to create our “new normal”.

For me, that meant finding safe ways to capture family moments. After all, kids are still growing, milestones are still occurring, and special occasions still deserve to be captured.

In June, Janelle & Rick reached out regarding a family session. We discussed how to best capture family moments, while keeping everyone’s health top of mind.

I was very excited at the opportunity of a spring session and even more excited to share the safety precautions I had put in place. And because Janelle & Rick’s children are both teenagers, I knew everyone would take instructions well! Having that in mind, I shared a few other rules that would help us achieve a successful family session.

Social Distancing

I brought my long zoom lens to ensure high quality photography and high quality safety! Throughout the session I used lots of verbal direction and avoided any sort of close distance talking.

Keeping Hands to Ourselves

Between the family, hugs, hand holding, and the occasional piggy back ride were perfectly acceptable! But when it came to me, I made sure to over-communicate (instead of touch) when someone needed to move their face a little to the right or squish closer together.

Take it Outside

Normally, I prefer outdoor sessions regardless because we get to take advantage of nature’s backdrop and natural light! Having sessions outside allows for more room to move around and capture candid and playful moments. And yes, it also adds an extra layer of safety.

At the end of the day, we were all so happy with the results of the photos and neither the quality nor creativity was compromised. Below I have shared some of my favorite shots. If you love them too and are ready for a socially distanced family session, make sure to reach out!
