There is one element that can make any place an ideal photography location. Light! That being said, over the years I have frequented some locations that have great light as well as certain unique qualities that make family sessions that much more special. When clients ask for recommendations, I always pull these favourites from my back pocket!
Kemptville
There are great structures in this community that make for perfect family photoshoot backdrops. For example, the bright red wall everyone in Kemptville knows and loves! And to add neutral colours to the mix, you can find some lush greenery two minutes from the red wall. The walking path itself is beautiful, and surrounded by serene large trees and bushes that make for magnificent photography.
Ottawa
When planning a May session, the apple blossoms in Ottawa are a must. The National Art Centre, apart from its modern urban architecture, has beautiful blooms in their courtyard that are perfect for family photography. In addition, the Dominion Arboretum by the Experimental Farm boasts large crabapples planted in the 1950’s that bloom bigger and brighter every year.
However, family pictures in Ottawa can be taken year round and not just May! In Manotick, I like holding photoshoots at the historic Watson’s Mill and the David Bartlett Park, which is a great option if you’ve got a pup in the family. Equally, in Kanata, I always suggest the Walter Baker Park. The park has picturesque trees, a pond, a gazebo, and beautiful trails that make for varied photographs. Not to mention… there is a park for the little ones where they can have a break and play after your session!
Naturally, I am always open to visiting new locations, especially if it is a place that is special to you and your family! No matter the place, I will make sure we have good light and that you are making the most of being together, while I capture those sweet family moments!
